Managing Editor

Department: Editorial
Location: Dallas, TX

UWorld is seeking an on-site Managing Editor for our web-based, question-bank company.  We publish practice questions and rationales for students who are preparing for high-stake exams.  This is a great opportunity to impact our well-established test-prep products, namely USMLE®, NCLEX®, MCAT®, SAT®, and ACT®, as well as our upcoming health sciences and finance/accounting test-prep question banks.  A degree in a science-related discipline, in addition to managerial and medical editing experience, is a plus.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in English, medical education, or related field

Minimum Experience:

  • Five years of editorial management and supervisory experience
  • Ten years of scientific and/or medical editing experience
  • Experience using various style formats, including AMA Manual of Style
  • Exceptional proficiency in MS Word
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of scientific concepts, terminology, technologies, and applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and strict quality-control guidelines
  • Ability to review the work of other editors and accept review of your work
  • Ability to contribute to a collaborative product while coordinating and prioritizing multiple tasks

Job Responsibilities:

Supervision and Collaboration

  • Oversees editorial processes, including work flow and editor assignments
  • Manages evaluation of editorial staff, including performance reviews and training oversight
  • Monitors editorial involvement in current products and those under development
  • Meets monthly with UWorld Executive Management and reports on department status
  • Attends monthly management meetings and reports on department updates
  • Compiles and analyzes workflow data to maximize editorial functions
  • Serves as lead liaison with other UWorld departments
  • Develops and evaluates work quality measures and directs implementation of style guides and assessment systems

Technical/Quality Assurance

  • Edits test questions and reviews items for adherence to standard methodologies
  • Edits scientific terminology for spelling and accuracy
  • Edits for grammar, punctuation, clarity, and consistency of style
  • Provides suggestions to content developers for substantive changes
  • Edits UWorld marketing pieces, human resources materials, and miscellaneous company documents

Limitations:

  • Applicants must have some scientific editing experience to be considered for this role.  Corporate communications editors or literary editors will not be considered.
  • Applicants should be available to work onsite from our Irving, TX office (Dallas-Fort Worth area).  Remote workers will not be considered.
  • This is a permanent position.  No contract employees will be considered.
